About US
As our Hawaiian Genealogy Recovery Project hui expanded, we wanted to find a name that symbolized and honored the unique relationship between genealogy, story, ancestors, and descendants. In May of 2023, Dr. Lilikalā Kameʻeleihiwa determined that Moʻopono would be a mission statement, and an all encompassing inoa Hawaiʻi (Hawaiian name) for this recovery project. To our hui, moʻopono is the empowerment of the all encompassing relationship between moʻolelo (story), moʻokūʻauhau (genealogy), and moʻopuna (descendants). Moʻo refers to the idea of succession and is the foundation of genealogy. Moʻopono thus refers to the pono (righteous) succession of stories, lineages, genealogies, ancestors, and their descendants. This project is meant to link all of these different "moʻo" in a way that empowers people to improve and do good for the Lāhui (people of Hawaiʻi).
