A Hawaiian Genealogy Recovery Project
~ 56 OUT OF 65 GENEALOGY RECORDS TRANSCRIBED ~
A TOTAL OF 7,393 PAGES SO FAR!

This Hawaiian Genealogy Recovery Project began in 2021, with the desire of Dr. Lilikalā Kameʻeleihiwa, a Historian and Senior Professor at the Kamakakūokalani Center for Hawaiian Studies at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa, to allow the people of Hawaiʻi to have free access to additional resources to research their genealogy.

Dr. Kameʻeleihiwa formed the Hawaiian Ancestry - Moʻopono hui, with 4 undergraduate and 4 graduate students from the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa.  This hui is dedicated to completing the transcribing of a collection of 55 handwritten books, written mostly in ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi (Hawaiian language), that includes over 9000 pages, found in the Hawaiʻi State Archives.

The 55 books in this collection were created by the Board of Genealogy of Hawaiian Chiefs and other authors during the 19th century. After the boardʻs dissolution, the Kalanianaole family inherited the genealogy records. These records were then donated to the Archives as the "Kalanianaole Collection".  Currently, the collection is dispersed across multiple collections at the Hawaiʻi State Archives.

The Hawaiian Ancestry - Moʻopono hui is continuously working to improve accessibility to these documents through the transcription and digitization of these records. The 55 books in this collection have been organized into 65 individual records in the transcribing process, as some of the books have several different versions. Once each record is transcribed, it must be vetted, indexed, and then uploaded to the Hawaiian Ancestry - Moʻopono HSHK Knowledge Well website for viewing. As this is a slow process, we appreciate your patience! Our final step will be to complete the translations of these documents from ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi to English.

Our transcribing process converts handwritten information, from archival Genealogy Books, into a typed text searchable format, allowing you to search for your ancestorʻs name on our website.
